Keys to Happiness Piano Studio

Online Piano Lessons

What you need:

  • A piano or keyboard.

If you are going to use a keyboard, especially if you are going to purchase one, here's what you should look for:
    - At least 61 full-size/standard size keys (with a preference for a full 88 keys, which is what a piano has)
    - Headphone jack
    - Sustain pedal (built-in or jack to connect one that you buy separately)
    - Touch sensitive keys
    - Weighted keys

If you don't already have a piano, a keyboard can be a very cost-effective way to start out. A local store might be a good option (supports your local economy), or Amazon (potentially lower prices), or Sweetwater, an online business based in Fort Wayne (where I am located) with a really big selection. I'm happy to chat with you about how to go about buying a keyboard (or piano).

  • A laptop, tablet, or smartphone with high speed internet access via wifi.

We'll be using Zoom to meet during our lessons. While it might be possible to do that on a data-only connection, it seems to me that that would result in using a LOT of data. Here's what Zoom suggests for the best experience in terms of bandwidth: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362023-System-Requirements-for-PC-Mac-and-Linux#bandwidth (and you might want to scroll through the other requirements as well, making sure that you have speakers, a microphone, a webcam, etc. - normally this stuff is all built in as I'm writing in 2019, but if you have older equipment, it's worth checking).

How it works:

  • I teach the Simply Music piano method. At a very basic level, what happens is: I tell you what to do, and you do it.

This means that you must be willing to invest a certain amount of trust in me as the person who knows and understands the method. In other words, you must be coachable.

  • We'll meet weekly (except for weeks published on the calendar) for 40 to 60 minutes (depending on the size of the lesson) and you'll have assignments for playing during the week. You'll need to set aside 15 to 20 minutes per day to practice - every day if possible, but at least five days a week, preferably at the same time each day. You'll build a playlist of 30 to 50 songs during your first year, and there will be specific instructions for how to practice and maintain your playlist.

  • You'll need to sign my policies governing payment, missed lessons, and other matters of logistics.

  • There will be ample opportunity to ask questions and get clarification about everything presented here and in the lessons.
